Line Chart
In this chapter, we will explore the topic of Line Charts. You will learn how to use line charts to visualize data in order to display changes and trends. This tool is especially useful for tracking changes over time and comparing multiple data sets, making them clearer and easier to understand.
Creating a Line Chart
- Select the data range you want to display on the chart. Make sure you have at least two columns: one for labels (e.g., months) and one or more for values (e.g., car sales for different brands);
- Click on Insert → Chart;
- In the Chart editor menu, choose the Line chart type;
- Make sure the correct data range is specified in the Data range section.
It's also worth mentioning the Smooth line chart, which can be helpful for smoothing fluctuations in data, allowing you to better identify overall trends and patterns.
Example of Use
Let’s consider a table with car sales data by month for several brands. We want to create a chart that shows changes in sales volume for each brand, comparing data from 2023 and 2024.
- Select the range A1:F25 (including headers and data);
- Click on Insert → Chart;
- In the Chart editor menu, select Line chart;
- Ensure that the data range A1:F25 is selected. The Series section should contain sales data for BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Toyota, and Honda.
Interpreting the Chart
- Axes:
- The horizontal axis will display the months (Date);
- The vertical axis will show car sales volumes for each brand;
- Lines:
- Each line will represent the sales for one brand, showing the trend of changes over the months.
This chart helps visualize how car sales for different brands changed over time and allows for comparisons between them.
Analyzing Results
- Sales for BMW and Mercedes in January 2024 have significantly decreased compared to the same period in 2023, which could indicate a drop in demand or supply chain issues;
- Toyota and Honda, on the other hand, showed stable results, with only minor fluctuations in sales volume, suggesting consistent interest in these brands.
