Basic Modelling Techniques

Creating a Lamp

Delete the default object and follow next steps to add a cone for the lampshade.

Then, using the bottom menu, adjust the following properties to customize its shape.

Radius 1
2
Radius 2
0.5
Base Fill Type
Nothing

Add a cylinder for the base of the lamp.

Edit Mode

Isolate the cylinder from the rest of the scene using the / button. With the cylinder selected, hit the Tab button to Switch to edit mode and create the shape of a lamp base.

Adding Loop Cuts

Use Ctrl + R to add loop cuts, splitting the object into segments for more detailed editing. Adjust the number of cuts using the bottom menu, the scroll wheel or the + and - button.

Proportional Editing

Turn on Proportional Editing from the tab above or hit O to enable proportional editing to affect surrounding vertices when moving, scaling, or grabbing selected vertices.

Go into wireframe mode. Hit A twice or click on any space in the 3D window to deselect all vertices on the cylinder. Then Use C for circle select or B for box select to select the middle vertices.

Edge Loops

You can also select the middle vertices as an edge loop, which is basically a chain of connected edges where each edge shares a vertex with the previous edge, Select edge loops by holding 'Alt' and right-clicking on the loop or by double-clicking on the edge(for laptop users).

Creating the Lamp Base

With the middle edge loop selected and proportional editing turned on, hit S to scale the selected vertices, along with the neighboring vertices to give the shape a bulge in the middle. Do this while adjusting your mouse scroll-wheel up and down or using the + and - buttons to adjust the radius of the proportional edit tool. Deselect the middle vertices. Repeat this process for the top and bottom vertices, but this time, shrink them.

When you’re okay with the body of your vase, hit Tab to go back to Object mode. Then hit / to unisolate and view the rest of the scene.

Select your lamp base and, using the move tool, adjust it to match the lamp shade. If you want to, parent the base to the shade for easier control.

Note

Don't forget to save your work hit Ctrl + S or use the menu to do it.
