Discrete vs Continuous Random Variable

Discrete random variable: Discrete variables can take a finite number of distinct values. It is used when we can count events and take only a countable number of distinct values like 0,1,2,3...

Examples:

  • The number of students present at the lesson.
  • The number of children in a family.
  • The number of red balls in the box.
  • ...

Continuous random variable:

A continuous random variable is used when the data can take an infinite amount of values.

Examples:

  • One's temperature on a random day.
  • One's age in years.
  • Distance.
  • ...
