Adding Materials in Blender

Adding Materials with the Blender kit Add-on

To quickly add textures and materials for your project, you can use royalty-free materials that are available on asset stores like Blender Kit.

The easiest way to access premade materials is by downloading the Blender Kit add-on. Install the add-on from the Blender Kit website, and then install it in Blender.

Using the Blender Kit Add-on

With the add-on enabled, navigate to the 'Materials' section. Search for materials and drag and drop any desired material onto your object.

Here, we applied a knitted texture to the bear model.

It's obvious that certain textures do not wrap correctly onto models. For example, when applying materials from the Blender Kit library or external sources, the textures may not align properly with the model. This issue often arises from the need to properly unwrap the model's UVs to ensure the material maps correctly.

Some Material shaders often have image texture maps that require proper UV unwrapping for correct application.

Texturing Our Scene

We’ll apply these CC0 - licensed texture found in the following links:

For the Bear: https://www.texturecan.com/details/401/

For the Cabin: https://www.texturecan.com/details/488/

Then download the resolution you need and unzip the files.

Texturing the Bear

We’d select our bear and create a new material. Then rename it to ‘Bear’

Then add in an image texture. You can do that by two ways:

Using the yellow radio button in the materials tab

Adding an ‘Image Texture node’ in the node Editor. Hit ‘Shift A’ and add ‘Texture -> Image Texture’.

Then, connect the ‘color’ node to the input ‘Base color’ node.

Hit ‘Open’ and select the image texture that you just downloaded.

Repeat the same thing for the head of the bear.

Add a new material for the eyes and mouth and set the color to black, and roughness to ‘0.300’.
