AWS Direct Connect

AWS Direct Connect is a service that provides a dedicated network connection from your on-premises infrastructure directly to AWS services. This connection is more reliable and secure than using the internet, offering lower latency and higher throughput. It's ideal for businesses that need to transfer data efficiently between local environments and the cloud. By creating a private link, Direct Connect enhances data security by bypassing the public internet. This is especially useful for organizations that handle large data volumes or require fast, low-latency connections.

Direct Connect offers two types of connections:

  • Dedicated Connections: Provide a direct Ethernet link with speeds from 1 Gbps to 100 Gbps;
  • Hosted Connections: Bandwidth is shared among customers, offering speeds from 50 Mbps to 10 Gbps.

Each type is designed to meet different bandwidth needs and control levels.

Virtual Interfaces (VIFs) are crucial for connecting your on-premises network with AWS resources. There are three types:

  • Private VIF: For accessing Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs);
  • Public VIF: For connecting to AWS public services like Amazon S3;
  • Transit VIF: For centralized routing across multiple VPCs and regions.

The Direct Connect Gateway adds flexibility by allowing connections to multiple VPCs across different regions through a single connection, simplifying network management. Direct Connect offers benefits like cost savings on bandwidth, consistent network performance, enhanced security through private connectivity, and easy integration into hybrid cloud environments.

Setting up Direct Connect involves three main steps: establishing a connection, creating a Virtual Interface in the AWS console, and configuring your network equipment to communicate with AWS, usually using BGP for dynamic routing. Direct Connect is commonly used for high-throughput workloads like big data analytics, as a backbone for disaster recovery due to its low latency, and in hybrid IT environments where applications are spread across on-premises and cloud infrastructures.

When implementing Direct Connect, consider having redundant connections for reliability, using VPN as a backup, integrating with other AWS services for complex scenarios, and managing costs related to port hours and data transfer fees. Overall, AWS Direct Connect is essential for organizations that want to leverage cloud scalability while maintaining control over network performance, security, and costs. Stay tuned for more on network security with AWS VPN in our next module.
