Blend Modes

Blending modes in Figma allow you to stylize objects and images by altering how they interact visually. To apply a blending mode:

  • Select an object or group, such as text or an image;
  • Go to the Design Panel under the Appearance section;
  • Click on the droplet icon labeled Apply Blend Mode, and choose from the list of blending modes.

As you hover over different options, the object's appearance changes based on how it interacts with other elements underneath it. For example, applying a blending mode like Soft Light to an image over a blue background creates a blended, faded look.

Blending modes is not used often in UI design, but what you need to know is:

  • The Darken group makes the white color invisible, and the Lighten group makes the color black invisible;
  • The Overlay group blends colors of two images;
  • The Difference group creates stylized effects;
  • The last Color group affects the hue, saturation, and overall color.

It is recommended to apply blending modes to individual objects or groups rather than entire frames for better control and results.
