Writing Formulas in Plain Language

Both Google Sheets and Excel now let you describe what you want in plain language, instead of writing a formula from memory.

In Excel, this happens through Copilot, using a chat panel next to your worksheet:

Add a column that shows the total sales for the "East" region, using the region names in column B and the values in column C.

Copilot returns a working formula, and can explain what each part of it does if you are not sure how it works. The same approach works for building a pivot table or a quick chart, without going through the menus manually.

Editing and Reviewing Changes Safely

Because these tools can edit your workbook directly, reviewing what actually changed matters.

Excel's Edit with Copilot includes a Chat/Edit switcher, letting you choose between:

  • Chat only, where Copilot answers questions and suggests changes without touching your workbook;
  • Edit, where Copilot applies changes directly to your cells and formulas. A feature called Show Changes highlights exactly what Copilot modified, so you can review each edit before deciding whether to keep it. This matters most in shared workbooks, where an unreviewed change can affect someone else's work.

Task

Open a real spreadsheet you work with. Ask its built-in AI tool to write one formula you would normally build by hand, then review exactly what it changed before accepting the result.
