The Pirate Metrics (AARRR) framework is a powerful model for understanding and improving product growth. Created by Dave McClure, this framework breaks down the user journey into five key stages: Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral, and Revenue. Each stage represents a critical point in the product lifecycle where you can measure user behavior, ask targeted questions, and optimize for business success.

To see how these stages work in practice, imagine you are analyzing a new language learning app:

  • Acquisition: you track how many users discover the app through online ads, social media, or word of mouth. Metrics might include the number of app downloads and website visits;
  • Activation: you measure how many users complete the sign-up process and finish their first lesson. If users struggle here, you might improve onboarding;
  • Retention: you monitor how many users return to learn more languages after their first session. Metrics could be daily active users (DAU) or users who complete lessons over several days;
  • Referral: you look at how many users invite friends to join the app, perhaps by sharing a referral link or posting about the app on social media;
  • Revenue: you track how many users upgrade to a paid plan or make in-app purchases, helping you understand the app’s earning potential.

By asking questions and tracking metrics at each stage, you can identify bottlenecks and opportunities for growth throughout the user lifecycle.
