Not every row belongs in your data model. In this chapter, you'll learn how to filter and sort rows in Power Query, and more importantly, when to filter here versus in your report. You'll explore column dropdown filters, number and date filters, sorting, removing duplicates, and the key principle that anything filtered in Power Query is permanently excluded from your model.
By understanding this distinction, you'll build leaner, faster models without accidentally removing data your report users might need.
1. Your dataset contains sales records from 2019 through 2024, but your company only wants to analyze 2023 and 2024. Where should you filter out the older years?
2. You sort a column in Power Query and notice a new step appears in the Applied Steps pane. You decide you don't want to keep the sort. What should you do?
