Adjusting Reading and Discussion Settings

WordPress offers options to control how your content appears on the front end of your site and how visitors interact with it. These settings are managed through the Reading and Discussion sections in the dashboard.

Homepage Display Options

In a previous lesson, we talked about assigning a page to display your blog posts. Now, let's focus on choosing your website's homepage.

To update this setting:

  • Go to Settings → Reading in the WordPress dashboard;
  • Under Your homepage displays, you have two options:
    • Your latest posts: ideal for blogs or news sites where the homepage automatically shows the newest articles;
    • A static page: ideal for business sites, portfolios, and institutional websites.

If you choose A static page, you must assign:

  • A Homepage: usually a page like Home, introducing your business or project;
  • A Posts page: a page where your blog posts will be listed (for example, a page titled Blog or News).

👉 In this course, we are creating an institutional website. That's why we are setting the Home page as the homepage and using a separate Blog page for articles and updates.

Still under Settings → Reading, you can configure:

  • The number of blog posts displayed per page (Blog pages show at most);
  • How many posts appear in syndication feeds (RSS/Atom);
  • Whether to display full content or a summary on the posts feed.

A good practice is to display 5 to 10 posts per page to keep navigation easy and fast.

Managing Comment Settings
expand arrow

To control visitor interaction with your content, go to Settings → Discussion.

Key settings you'll find:

  • Default post settings: allow or disallow comments on new posts by default;
  • Comment moderation: hold comments for manual approval;
  • Email notifications: receive alerts when someone comments or a comment awaits moderation.

If you prefer full control over your comments, enable Comment must be manually approved.

Disabling Comments on Specific Pages
expand arrow

Some pages, like your homepage, contact page, or privacy policy, usually don't need a comment section.

To disable comments on a specific page:

  1. Go to Pages → All Pages;
  2. Hover over the page and click Edit;
  3. Open the Discussion panel and uncheck Allow comments;
  4. Click Update.

If you don't see the Discussion panel:

  • Click the three-dot menu at the top-right of the editor;
  • Select Preferences, and enable it under Panels.
