Creating Posts with Block Editor

In addition to institutional pages like Home, About, and Contact, many websites include a blog—a space for sharing updates, articles, or news. These blog entries are created using posts, which are ideal for content that changes regularly or needs to be organized chronologically.

Activating and Verifying the Blog Page

Some WordPress themes automatically create a blog section, while others require you to manually assign a page for your posts.

To check if your blog is active:

  1. Go to Settings → Reading in the WordPress dashboard;
  2. Under Your homepage displays, look for the option Posts page;
  3. If a page is already assigned (e.g., "Blog"), that's where your posts will appear;
  4. If not, create a new blank page titled "Blog" and select it as the Posts page.

Once this is set, all new posts will be listed automatically on that page.

Creating a New Post

To create a new post:

  1. Go to Posts → Add New;
  2. You'll be taken to the Block Editor, where you can begin adding content;
  3. Start by adding a title at the top; this is the name of your blog post and will also be used to generate the post's URL.
Adding and Arranging Blocks

In a previous lesson, you learned how to work with different blocks like text, images, and buttons. Now, let's revisit them specifically in the context of blog posts.

WordPress posts are built using blocks, and you can mix and match different types to structure your content. Here are some of the most useful blocks for creating a blog post:

  • Paragraph: for writing your main text;
  • Heading: to break your post into sections and improve readability;
  • Image: add photos or graphics to support your text;
  • Video or Embed: insert a YouTube video, Tweet, or another web element;
  • Button: add a call-to-action at the end of your post.

You can click the + icon to add new blocks or type / followed by the block name.

Customizing Block Settings

Each block comes with its own settings panel on the right side of the editor. Depending on the block type, you'll find options like:

  • Alignment: center, left, or right alignment;
  • Color settings: adjust background or text color to highlight sections;
  • Spacing: add margin or padding for better visual separation between elements;
  • Image customization resize images, align them, or use a Cover block to place text over a background image.

These features give you the flexibility to create engaging blog layouts—even without writing a single line of code.

Use Visual References for Inspiration
expand arrow

If you're unsure how to structure your first blog post, look at websites from major brands or bloggers you admire. See how they organize their content, use images, and break up sections. Then try to mimic that structure in your own post.

Using a visual reference is a great way to learn what works and develop your own style.
