Understanding Filter Context

Veeg om het menu te tonen

Filter context is the most important concept in all of DAX, and this chapter is dedicated entirely to it. If your measures sometimes return unexpected numbers, understanding filter context is almost always the explanation.

You'll learn what filter context is, where it comes from (visuals, slicers, cross-filtering, and the Filters pane), and how it flows through your data model's relationships. Through hands-on demos using a matrix visual and slicers, you'll see exactly how each cell in a report runs its own separate calculation and how selecting different filters changes what your measures see.

1. You have a matrix visual with Category on rows and Segment on columns. Your Total Sales measure appears in each cell. What determines the value shown in the "Tents / Retail" cell?

2. A user selects "West" in a region slicer. Your Total Sales measure suddenly shows only West region sales. Where does this filtering happen?
