When you picture someone wealthy, you might imagine luxury cars, designer clothes, or grand homes. However, true wealth is often completely hidden.
As Morgan Housel writes in The Psychology of Money, wealth is essentially the nice cars not purchased, the diamonds not bought — it is the option not yet taken to buy something.

Looking rich is about visible spending: flashy cars, expensive gadgets, or lavish vacations. Being rich, on the other hand, is about having assets and financial security that are not always visible. Someone who owns several rental properties or has a large investment portfolio may drive an old car and live in a modest house, yet have far more real wealth than a person who flaunts luxury items.

Instead, you imagine yourself in the car and think, "Wow, if I had that car, people would think I'm cool." The irony of flashy spending is that you do it to gain admiration from others, but those others completely ignore you—they only focus on the object.
