The 3D viewport is the main workspace in Blender where you interact with objects and view your scene in three dimensions.

The left panel contains the toolbar, which changes based on the current mode (object, sculpt, texture paint, etc). In object mode, the three most important tools are move, rotate, and scale.

Use hotkeys to constrain transformations: press X, Y, or Z to lock to an axis. The Transform panel in the right sidebar provides precise numeric control for location, rotation, and scale.

Adding New Objects

You can press Shift + A or use the 3D viewport menu to add new objects, called primitives (meshes, curves, lights, etc.). They are the basic building blocks of a Blender scene.

After adding an object, its properties can be customized, such as adjusting the number of sides on a cylinder. Press F9 to reopen the properties menu if it closes, provided the object has not been edited yet.

Hotkeys are shortcuts used in Blender. Keep in mind that you can customize the keymap in Preferences to suit your workflow. You can find full documentation here:

Duplicating Objects

  • Use Shift + D to create a duplicate of the selected object.
  • Use Alt + D to create a linked duplicate (changes to one affect the other).
Parenting Objects

  • Select the child object first, then hold Shift and select the parent.
  • Press Ctrl + P and choose Set Parent to Object.
Viewport Navigation

  • Hold Middle Mouse Button — Orbit around the scene.
  • Shift + Middle Mouse Button — Pan view.
  • Scroll Wheel — Zoom in/out.
  • Numpad 0 — Camera view.
Edit Mode Basics

  • Tab — Toggle between Object and Edit Mode.
  • A — Select all / deselect all.
  • B — Box select multiple elements.
  • E — Extrude selected vertices/edges/faces.
  • M — Merge vertices (choose option).
Quick Object Operations

  • Ctrl + A — Apply transformations (location, rotation, scale).
  • Ctrl + J — Join selected objects into one.
  • F2 — Rename selected object.
  • X or Delete — Delete selected objects or elements.
