Shapes in Figma: Creating and Customizing Design Elements

Drawing shapes
Learn to create shapes using tools like the rectangle, ellipse, polygon, line, or star. Click and drag to draw a shape freely, holding Shift to constrain proportions (e.g., a perfect square or circle) or Alt/Option to expand the shape from the center.
Adjusting dimensions and proportions
- Use the chain icon in the Layout panel to constrain or unlink proportions while resizing shapes;
- Adjust the opacity to change the transparency of the shape;
- Modify the corner radius for rounded edges, with the ability to set separate values for individual corners if needed.
Adding fills and strokes
Shapes can be customized with:
- Fills: apply solid colors, gradients, or adjust the fill opacity;
- Strokes (borders): customize position (inside, center, outside), thickness (weight), and style (solid, dashed, dotted). You can also adjust dash and gap settings for custom patterns;
- Lines: include additional options like start and end points (e.g., arrows, circles).
Effects and enhancements
Add effects to shapes for enhanced visuals:
- Drop shadows and inner shadows for depth;
- Blur and background blur for a polished look.
Editing vector shapes
To edit a vector shape:
- Double-click the shape or click the Edit Object icon in the design panel to enter isolation mode;
- Use the bend tool to create curves and adjust vector points as needed;
- Exit editing mode by clicking on empty space or the X button.
By following these techniques, you can create and customize shapes with precision and creativity.
