What Is Gemini Notebook and Why It's Different

メニューを表示するにはスワイプしてください

Gemini Notebook is Google's research tool, and it lives at notebook.google.com. You may know it as NotebookLM, which was its name until July 2026. Google renamed it, gave it a new logo, and kept everything else: the same notebooks, the same features, and working redirects from the old address. Around 30 million people use it.

Pointing Inward Instead of Outward

Every assistant in the previous courses points outward. It answers from everything it absorbed during training and reaches for the live web when that is not enough.

A notebook points inward. You hand it a set of documents, and it answers from those documents only. Every claim carries a citation that opens the exact passage it came from.

That sounds like a limitation until you need it. When the answer has to be traceable to a contract, a syllabus, a set of research papers, or your company's own documentation, an assistant that knows things from elsewhere is a liability. Grounding is what turns an answer into something you can check rather than something you have to trust.

Note
Note

Grounded does not mean infallible. The tool can still misread a table or summarize a nuance out of existence. What it gives you is a citation, so checking takes seconds instead of a search.

What It Is Not For

A notebook is the wrong tool for a general question, a blank-page writing task, or anything where you have no sources. For those, the Gemini app is faster. The final chapter covers exactly where the line falls.

Two Halves of the Screen

The interface splits along a simple line. Chat is where you ask questions. Studio is where you turn the same sources into something else: an audio discussion, a mind map, a report, a slide deck, a quiz. Most people discover the chat and never open the Studio, which means they use about a third of the product.
