Claude Cowork is the product that started this course making sense. It's Anthropic's desktop agent, built right into the Claude desktop app you might already be using. The shift from chat to Cowork is exactly the shift we talked about in Section 1. Claude chat answers your questions. Claude Cowork takes the question and goes off and does the thing. You point it at a folder, describe what you want done, and it works across your files and your connected apps to deliver a finished result. Not a draft of a result. The actual deliverable. What Cowork can do today:
Point it at a folder of messy downloads and ask it to organize, rename, deduplicate, or pull out what's relevant.
Drop it a folder of notes, transcripts, or screenshots and ask for a report, a memo, a briefing doc, or a spreadsheet. It assembles and synthesizes.
Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Notion, Asana, Linear, Jira, and many more. The connector catalog has hundreds of options.
When a task needs to touch the web, Cowork can drive your Chrome browser through the Claude for Chrome extension. We'll talk more about that in 2.2.
Send a task from the Claude mobile app and Cowork runs it on your desktop while you're walking around. We'll dig into this in Section 5.
Set a prompt to run daily, weekly, or monthly. Wake up Monday and your weekly summary is already done.
How it fits inside the app: Cowork lives in the Claude desktop app sidebar, right next to Chat. Same account, same login, same conversation history. There's no separate signup or extra product to buy.
Why Cowork is the home base for this course. Most agent products are browser-only. Cowork operates on your whole computer — your files, your apps, your browser, your phone — all from one place. For a non-technical user, that's the difference between "I have an AI that can do a thing" and "I have a coworker." That's the experience we want you to leave with.
