Deep Research and Guided Learning

Two tools change what a chat is for. One turns Gemini into a researcher that works for several minutes without you. The other stops it from answering at all, on purpose.
Deep Research
Select deep research in the tools menu, then describe what you want to know. Gemini writes a research plan first and shows it to you. Read it before approving, because editing one line in the plan is cheaper than rejecting a finished report built on the wrong assumption.
Once approved, it browses dozens of sources and returns a report with citations. You can attach your own files first, and the report will combine your material with what it finds on the web.
The report is a starting point, not an ending. From it you can:
- Open the report in Canvas and rewrite any section;
- Turn it into a web page, an infographic, or a quiz;
- Generate an audio overview and listen to it;
- Export the whole thing to Google Docs.
A research report is only as reliable as the pages behind it. Open a few citations before you trust a number, since the model summarizes what it found rather than verifying it.
Guided Learning
Guided learning does the opposite of what an assistant normally does. Instead of handing over the answer, it breaks the topic into steps, asks you questions, and checks that you followed before moving on. It can also build quizzes and visual explanations from material you upload.
The distinction is worth keeping in mind. Regular chat is for when you need the answer. Guided learning is for when you need to be able to produce that answer yourself next time, which is a different goal and a different tool.
