Exploring Themes and Plugins
Themes and plugins are two of the most powerful tools in WordPress. They allow you to customize the design of your website and add extra features without needing to code.
A theme controls how your website looks—its colors, fonts, layout, and overall design. WordPress comes with a default theme, but you can install new themes to change your site's appearance.
A plugin is an add-on that adds new features and functionality to your site. Want to improve SEO, add contact forms, or turn your website into an online store? There's a plugin for that.
What Are Themes?
A theme defines the visual design of your website. It controls elements like:
Layout: how your content is arranged on the page;
Colors and fonts: the overall style of your site;
Navigation: how visitors move between pages.
Themes allow you to completely change your website's look without affecting your content. Whether you want a professional business site, a portfolio, or a blog, there's a theme for every type of website.
You can browse and install themes directly from WordPress by going to Appearance → Themes. There are thousands of free and premium themes available.
What Are Plugins?
Plugins let you add new features to your website without coding. Some plugins improve security, while others help with SEO, speed optimization, or adding forms.
Here are a few popular free plugins:
Yoast SEO: helps improve search engine rankings;
Elementor: a drag-and-drop page builder for designing custom layouts;
WPForms: adds contact forms so visitors can reach you;
To install a plugin, go to Plugins → Add New, search for the one you want, and click Install Now. After installing, don't forget to click Activate to enable it.
Both themes and plugins can be installed directly from the WordPress dashboard:
- To install a theme: Go to Appearance → Themes → Add New, choose a theme, and click Install;
- To install a plugin: Go to Plugins → Add New, search for a plugin, and click Install Now, then Activate.
Once installed, themes can be customized in Appearance → Customize, and plugins usually have their own settings inside WordPress.
