What is Illustrator?

Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editing software developed by Adobe Inc., designed primarily for creating and editing scalable vector artwork.

Launched in 1987, Illustrator is widely used in graphic design, illustration, and digital art.
Unlike raster-based programs like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator uses mathematical equations to create graphics, which allows for infinite scalability without losing quality. We'll get to that later in the course in more detail. But we're gonna create logos, icons, symbols, and even some digital art like these:

The software features include:

  • Vector Graphics: creates images using paths defined by mathematical equations, making them infinitely scalable without losing resolution or quality;
  • Artboards: multiple workspaces within a single document, allowing designers to work on multiple layouts and designs simultaneously;
  • Pen Tool: a versatile tool for creating precise paths and shapes, essential for drawing complex shapes and curves;
  • Shape Builder Tool: simplifies the process of creating complex shapes by merging, deleting, and modifying existing shapes;
  • Typography Tools: advanced text tools for creating and manipulating text, with options for kerning, leading, and formatting; Brushes and Effects: Wide range of customizable brushes, patterns, and effects for adding artistic touches to illustrations;
  • Color Management: supports various color models and offers advanced color tools, including gradients, swatches, and the Color Guide panel;
  • Integration: seamless integration with other Adobe Creative Cloud applications like Photoshop, InDesign, and After Effects, enabling smooth workflows;
  • Layers: organizes artwork by stacking layers, making it easier to manage different elements of a design.

The Difference between Adobe Photoshop and Adobe illustrator:

Photoshop is your go-to for photo editing and pixel-based artwork, while Illustrator is essential for creating crisp, scalable vector graphics.

Adobe Photoshop is primarily a raster-based software. It is designed for editing and manipulating photos and pixel-based images. You can do tasks like photo retouching, digital painting, and creating web graphics.

Adobe Illustrator is a vector-based program used for creating and editing scalable vector graphics. It’s ideal for designing logos, icons, illustrations, typography, and any artwork that needs to be resized without losing quality.

Both programs are industry standards and often complement each other in design workflows. Adobe Illustrator is essential for graphic designers, illustrators, typographers, and artists for creating logos, icons, and intricate designs for both print and digital graphics. Like Photoshop, Illustrator is available through Adobe's subscription, either individually or as part of a full suite.

Luckily, Adobe offers a 7-day free trial of Illustrator, and also, all of Adobe apps. You can follow this link for the Illustrator one: Link.

  • You'll get the full app with the latest updates;
  • You won't be charged until after your free trial ends;
  • No fee if you cancel within 14 days.

And if you're a student, you can get a big discount!

When you're done, you’ll be able to download the Creative Cloud application. It will then allow you to install Illustrator very easily. Just follow the instructions and you’ll be all set!

Are you ready to bring your inner artist to life? Let's get started!
