Your Agent in the Browser

Cowork handles your computer. Claude for Chrome handles your browser. Together, they cover most of what a non-developer would want to automate.

Claude for Chrome is an extension. You install it from the Chrome Web Store, pin it to your toolbar, and open it as a side panel while you browse. From there, you can ask Claude to read the page, fill out a form, click around a site, pull data, or run a multi-step workflow across several tabs.

The important design choice is that Anthropic did not make you switch browsers. Comet and Atlas, which we will cover in the next two chapters, are entirely new browsers. You have to install them, import your bookmarks, log back into your sites, and make sure your password manager works properly.

Claude for Chrome is simpler. It is just an extension. You install it in 30 seconds, and your existing Chrome setup still works: your logins, your bookmarks, your password manager, and your other extensions.

Browser Compatibility

Works on Chrome and any Chromium-based browser. Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc — all fine. Firefox and Safari are not supported.

Platform Integration

Built-in knowledge of common platforms. Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Slack, GitHub. Ask "schedule a meeting" while you're on Calendar and it knows what to do.

Per-Site Permissions

Per-site permissions. You decide which sites Claude can act on. Sensitive sites like banks are blocked by default.

Workflow Recording

Record a workflow. Walk through a task once, Claude learns the steps, and you can replay it. Big unlock for repeated jobs.

Cowork Integration

Pairs with Cowork. A Cowork task that needs to do something on the web hands off to the Chrome extension to drive your browser.

Pricing. Same as Cowork — included with your Claude Pro plan at $20/month. You don't pay extra for the extension. The way to think about Claude for Chrome and Cowork together: Cowork is your hands on the whole computer. Claude for Chrome is your hands inside the browser. One subscription, one account, two complementary tools that talk to each other.
