Sets in Tableau are incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways to enhance your data analysis. You'll explore two common applications of sets: filtering and color coding. Remember, these are just the starting points — sets offer endless possibilities!

Filtering

One of the simplest and most common uses of Sets is filtering. By adding a Set to the Filters area, you can focus your visualization on a specific subset of data.

For example, let's add the Negatively Profitable States set created in Chapter 12 to the Filters area to isolate and analyze only the states with negative profits.

Color Coding

Sets can also be used to enhance visualizations through color coding. This allows you to highlight specific data points within a chart for better insights.

For example, let's drag the Negatively Profitable States set:

  • To the Filters area to filter data;
  • To the Color icon in the Marks area to highlight states with negative profits.

This approach can help identify which Sub-Categories are the least profitable across different states.

These are just two examples of how sets can be applied in Tableau. Whether you're filtering data, highlighting trends, or combining sets with other features, they provide a powerful tool for deeper analysis and visualization. Experiment with sets to uncover new insights in your data!
