Prompting Fundamentals

Prompting is the act of giving an AI model instructions. A prompt is any input you provide, such as a question, a command, a description, or a set of structured instructions, that tells the AI what you want it to produce.
Prompting is not just typing into a chat box. It is a creative skill that determines the quality of every output you get from an AI tool. The best prompt engineers are not necessarily the most technical people in the room, they are the clearest thinkers.
Generic input produces generic output. When you ask for “a blog post about AI,” the model lacks clear direction on tone, audience, or format, so it defaults to an average, often bland result. The solution is not a better model, it is a better prompt.
Providing context, not just commands, leads to much better outputs. The more information you give about who is writing, who the audience is, the desired format, and the purpose of the content, the more accurate and useful the result will be.
Negative constraints are as important as positive ones. If you do not want hashtags, a formal tone, or filler phrases, say so clearly.
Show the model what good looks like. Provide an example of the style or format you want. This gives the model a clear target and improves output quality.
