Gemini is now a menu rather than a chat box. Picking correctly comes down to two questions: where does the work already live, and do you need an answer or a finished thing.

A Rule of Thumb

Start in chat. Move to another surface only when chat becomes the wrong container:

• The same instructions and files keep getting pasted in – that is a Gem;
• The output is something you keep editing – that is Canvas;
• The answer needs sources you can check – that is deep research;
• The work is already open in a Google app – that is the side panel;
• The job repeats or runs long – that is one of the agents.

Two Things Sitting Just Outside This Course

Notebooks handle research grounded in a large set of your own documents, which is where they beat a Gem and its ten-file limit. Coding has a separate home as well: Google's agentic development platform is Antigravity, which replaced Gemini CLI for personal accounts in June 2026, so any tutorial telling you to install Gemini CLI is already out of date.

One Habit Worth Keeping

Every surface here runs on the same model family, so switching windows does not make answers smarter. Pick based on where the work already lives. And whatever the surface, check the sources before the output leaves your hands, because a wrong answer arrives in the same confident voice as a right one.
