SQL, or Structured Query Language, is a powerful language designed for querying and manipulating data within relational databases. You use SQL to interact with structured data stored in tables, where each table consists of rows and columns. SQL provides a standardized way to retrieve, insert, update, and delete data, making it an essential tool for anyone working with data in a relational database system. Its declarative nature allows you to specify what data you want, rather than detailing how to get it, which simplifies complex data operations and ensures consistency across different database systems.

The origins of SQL can be traced back to the 1970s, when researchers at IBM developed a language called SEQUEL (Structured English Query Language) as part of their System R project. SEQUEL was designed to manage and retrieve data stored in IBM's experimental relational database. The language later evolved into SQL, dropping the vowels for trademark reasons. In 1986, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) adopted SQL as the standard language for relational database management systems, and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) followed suit soon after. Over the years, SQL has continued to evolve, with regular updates to the standard and widespread adoption across commercial and open-source database platforms.

SQL enables you to perform a variety of operations that are fundamental to effective data management. The most common SQL operations include SELECT for retrieving data, INSERT for adding new records, UPDATE for modifying existing data, and DELETE for removing records. These operations are critical because they allow you to maintain, analyze, and manipulate the information stored in a database. By mastering these core SQL commands, you can efficiently manage data, ensure its accuracy, and support the needs of applications and users that depend on reliable information.
