When you upload an image to your WordPress site, the system automatically creates several versions of that image in different sizes. These settings are controlled in the Media Settings area, and adjusting them helps you optimize performance and maintain visual consistency across your website.

Understanding Media Settings

To access media settings: go to Settings → Media in your WordPress dashboard.

There, you'll find three default image sizes:

• Thumbnail size: small images often used in galleries or blog previews;

• Medium size: useful for inline content where a full-size image would be too large;

• Large size: typically used when you want a big image but still smaller than the original.

Each setting allows you to define the maximum width and height in pixels. WordPress will resize your uploaded images to fit these limits automatically.

Configuring Image Sizes

If you notice your images appearing blurry or too large/small in certain areas of your site, you may want to adjust these dimensions.

Keep in mind:

• Making these dimensions too large can lead to unnecessarily large image files;

• Making them too small can cause your site to stretch images and reduce quality.

These settings won't affect previously uploaded images—they'll only apply to new uploads.

If needed, you can regenerate thumbnails using a plugin like Regenerate Thumbnails to apply new dimensions to older images.

Consider adjusting media settings:

• If your theme displays thumbnails in a specific size and your images look stretched or blurry;
