When you work with others on an Excel workbook stored in the cloudβ€”such as on OneDrive or SharePointβ€”Excel enables real-time co-authoring. This means multiple users can open, view, and edit the same file at the same time. As soon as someone makes a change, you see their updates almost instantly, highlighted in the spreadsheet.

When you are co-authoring, Excel displays colored indicators or flags to show where other users are working. Each collaborator is assigned a color, and their name may appear when you hover over a cell they are editing. If someone is typing in a cell, you see their cursor and changes appear as they type.

If two people edit the same cell at the same time, Excel will try to merge changes and alert you to any conflicts. You are then prompted to choose which version to keep, making it easy to resolve overlapping edits without losing data. This system helps everyone stay on the same page and prevents accidental overwrites.

Co-authoring in Excel is designed to be seamless, so you can focus on your work without worrying about losing important changes or duplicating effort.
