Structured Ideation Techniques
The most important thing in the ideation phase is to be structured and not get stuck in the process of discussing and creating ideas for too long - it is not about how much time you spend on ideation, it is all about what you do during that time. The next most important thing is to avoid ideating alone at all times; you do not have to do this together with other design experts, it can be anyone really. The important thing is to be exposed to other ways of seeing the world and the problem at hand from various sources.
So how do we manage to waste time in the ideation phase?
There is no one-size-fits-all approach in ideation, but as a general rule of thumb, following a formal ideation method will help you manage your time better. Have a timer and keep the time! Yet better - if possible - have a designated facilitator who leads the team, keeps time, and provides instructions. Do not entertain unstructured discussions.
Another important tip is to take regular breaks! Do not sit with a problem for an extended period of time because if you do, your effectiveness and creativity will be impacted significantly; taking regular breaks is not a waste of time.
Moreover, if you are working in a team, gather everyone and ideate together. If you do not have a team, perhaps you can ask a friend or family member to sit with you and go through an ideation session. Your very last option - can be using AI to assist you in the ideation process; but beware of the limitations and pitfalls of whatever service you are using. Ask very open ended questions and push the AI to generate new ideas as much as possible. Sometimes, ideating with AI can result in good ideas; but be vigilant and skeptical as some AI services tend to have a hard time breaking out of their loops and generate creative ideas.
Remember, having fun is very important so try to maintain a good and positive mood throughout the session!
