Introduction to IP Address
An example of a home network involves using a router to connect various devices, such as laptops, phones, and smart TVs. In contrast, offices often utilize switches to connect multiple computers and printers within a Local Area Network (LAN), facilitating efficient resource sharing and communication.
IP Addressing Fundamentals
An IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. Each IP address serves two main functions: identifying the host or network interface and providing the location of the host in the network.
Activity: Checking Your IP Address
Objective: Understand how to check both your public and private IP addresses.
Instructions
- Finding Your Private IP Address (Windows):
- open the Command Prompt by typing
cmd
in the search bar; - type
ipconfig
and press Enter; - look for the IPv4 Address under your network adapter. This is your private IP address:
- open the Command Prompt by typing
- Finding Your Public IP Address:
- visit a website like whatismyipaddress.com or simply search "What is my IP" in Google;
- your public IP address will be displayed. This address is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and is how devices on the internet can communicate with your network.
Outcome
By completing this activity, you will gain a better understanding of how to locate both your private and public IP addresses, a foundational skill in network troubleshooting and management.
