Why Attention Visualization Matters
Swipe to show menu
Here are some image examples of attention heatmaps for different sentences. Each heatmap highlights which words the model focuses on when processing the input, revealing patterns in attention distribution:
- In a simple sentence like
"The cat sat on the mat", the attention heatmap may show strong focus between"cat"and"sat", indicating the model links the subject and action; - For a question such as
"What did the dog eat?", the heatmap might highlight the connection between"What"and"eat", helping you see how the model identifies the answer span; - In more complex sentences, attention patterns can reveal if the model is tracking long-range dependencies, such as pronoun references or subordinate clauses.
By studying these visualizations, you can identify if the model is attending to the right parts of the sentence for the task at hand, which is critical for tasks like question answering, translation, or sentiment analysis.
