Definition

Claude Project with custom instructions for the six-element brief framework and connected Gmail to pull source material directly from inbox.

This is the chapter where the theory becomes practical. We will give Claude a prompt that incorporates the six-element framework into its instructions, connect Gmail so it can access real source material, and apply it to an actual email thread. Claude will generate a structured brief and draft a follow-up response, all without leaving the app.

The most important habit you can develop is simple: when you do not know how to do something in Claude, ask Claude. Do not open another browser tab and search for "how to connect Gmail to Claude." Just ask it directly. That single habit is often the difference between people who unlock the full potential of AI and those who only use it as a basic chatbot.

1. Add the prompt

Paste the brief generator prompt into your Project's custom instructions so every new chat automatically follows the six-element framework.

2. Choose an input method

Either paste an email directly into chat or connect Gmail. The Gmail connector is more powerful for searching and processing multiple emails.

3. Connect Gmail

Ask Claude to connect your Gmail account. Follow the in-chat authorization flow and grant access. The same approach works for other connectors like Calendar or Notion.

4. Process an email

Ask Claude to find a specific email, verify it with a summary, then generate a structured brief. The Project instructions will apply automatically.

5. Draft a reply

Ask Claude to create a follow-up email draft in Gmail. Review it before sending, as Claude can create drafts but cannot send emails for you.

By the end of this chapter, you should be able to connect Gmail or another supported service by asking Claude to guide you through the setup process, use a Project's custom instructions to define a workflow that automatically applies to future chats, generate a structured six-element brief from a real email thread, and create a follow-up email draft in Gmail that is ready for your review before sending.
