Plugins are one of the most powerful features of WordPress. They allow you to add new functionality to your site—like contact forms, social sharing buttons, SEO tools, security features, and much more—without writing any code.

If themes control how your site looks, plugins control what your site can do.

Types of WordPress Plugins

Plugins come in many forms, depending on their purpose. Here are some common categories:

Functional plugins: add core features to your site, such as contact forms, SEO tools, or backups;
Design-Enhancing plugins: help you customize the appearance of your site with page builders or galleries;
Performance plugins: optimize speed, caching, and image delivery;
Security plugins: protect your site from spam, malware, and unauthorized access.

Many plugins are free and available in the official WordPress Plugin Directory, while others are paid or offer premium versions with additional features.

Searching for Plugins

You've already learned how to install plugins in an earlier lesson. Now let's take it a step further.

Instead of focusing only on installation, this time you'll learn how to search effectively, evaluate plugin quality, and decide which plugin best fits your needs.

To search for a plugin:

Go to Plugins → Add New in your WordPress dashboard;
Use the search bar to find a plugin by name or keyword;
Review the plugin details:
- Star rating and user reviews;
- Last updated date (recent updates are a good sign);
- Active installations (shows popularity);
- Compatibility with your version of WordPress.
Once you find a plugin that fits your needs, click Install Now, then Activate.

Always read the description and look at screenshots to make sure the plugin works the way you expect.
