In this chapter we'll take a look at some basic video and audio effects in Premiere Pro.
Basic video effects
- Gaussian blur: applies a smooth blur without directional bias; useful for soft-focus effects.
- Directional blur: blurs the image in a specific direction to simulate motion.
- Invert: reverses colors for a negative effect, often used in artistic visuals.
- Drop shadow: adds a shadow behind objects or text for better readability.
- Mirror: reflects part of an image along an axis for a symmetrical effect.
- Offset: shifts the image horizontally or vertically while looping edges.
- Turbulent displace: warps the image with fluid distortions, often used for fire, water, or smoke.
- Warp stabilizer: reduces camera shake for smoother footage.
- Black & white: converts the image to grayscale for a cinematic or vintage look.
- Ultra key: a high-quality chroma key effect for removing green screens.
- Noise: adds grain or digital noise to simulate vintage film texture.
- Basic 3d: rotates and moves a layer in 3d space.
- Posterize time: reduces frame rate for a stop-motion-like effect.
- Transform: provides advanced control over position, scale, and rotation with motion blur.
- Horizontal/vertical flip: flips an image left-right or upside-down.
- Crop: trims the edges of a clip and allows custom framing.
Masking effects
- Elliptical mask: applies an effect within a circular or oval area.
- Polygon mask: uses four adjustable points for more precise masking.
- Freehand mask: allows custom-shaped masks for advanced effects.
- Feathering: softens the mask edges for smoother blending.
Adjustment layers
- Go to the project panel and click new item.
- Select adjustment layer.
- Drag the adjustment layer onto the timeline above your clips.
- Apply effects to the adjustment layer to affect all clips below it.
Audio effects
- Pitch shifter: changes the pitch without affecting speed.
- High pass filter: removes low frequencies for a clearer sound.
- Low pass filter: removes high frequencies for a muffled effect.
- Fill left with right: copies the right channel to the left.
- Parametric eq: allows precise control over multiple frequency bands.
- Studio reverb: adds natural or artificial echo.
- Denoise: reduces background noise like hums and static.
- Single band compressor: balances loud and quiet sounds.
Experiment with these effects and try adding some of them to your video work.
